Microsoft and Epic Records to Offer Ongoing Exclusive Entertainment Content on Xbox Live
The online entertainment network features Natasha Bedingfield as first Artist of the Month, and offers music videos and Game with Fame sessions.

REDMOND, Wash., and NEW YORK March 16, 2006 Microsoft Corp. and music giant Epic Records today announced an agreement to make available a full year of exclusive artist content and high-definition music video downloads free for all Xbox 360 gamers. Over the next year, Xbox 360 and Epic Records will showcase 12 up-and-coming artists through the Artist of the Month (AOM) program via the Xbox Live service, the first and only unified global online entertainment network. Through the alliance, millions of Xbox Live members can enter a monthly sweepstakes with a prize of gaming against some of the hottest musicians through the Xbox Live Game with Fame” program.

“This program really taps into the passion and excitement that surround both video gaming and music,” said Cory Llewellyn, vice president of Epic Records Digital Marketing and Promotion. We are excited to bring our strong roster of developing artists together with Xbox Live for a variety of great experiences for consumers.

So, a few of you might know this (and even fewer might care), but the terrestrial radio market is soon to make a push into what they call “digital radio”. It’s not quite satellite and not quite regular radio, and yes you’ll have to buy another piece of proprietary hardware in order to listen to the same Clearchannel garbage in higher fidelity.

Now, it appears that your friend and mine the RIAA would like to create some kind of copy protection scheme.

Hey guys, way to bring your consumer base back to your side.

(an oldie but goodie from the email inbox)

A BIG FAT THANKS TO RECORD EXECS
Thank you for fighting the good fight against Internet MP3 file-swapping. Because of you, millions of kids will stop wasting time listening to new music and seeking out new bands. No more spreading the word to complete strangers about your artists. No more harmful exposure to thousands of bands via Internet radio, either. With any luck, they won’t talk about music at all. You probably knew you’d make millions embracing the technology. After all, the kids swapping were like ten times more likely to buy CD’s, making your
cause all the more admirable. It must have cost a bundle in future revenue, but don’t worry – computers are just a fad anyway, and the Internet is just plain stupid.

Also, how much more music would you buy if songs cost a nickel?. I know I’d start using iTunes from a consumer-side.

Ummm… iTunes? I thought it was a free download of the week…

Update: The track has been refreshed with the correct price, due to my merciless mockery. And nothing else!

I know there are a ton of people who read this blog (well… a couple at least) who are or have been in the music biz, so mostly to them I pose this request for comments (inspired by a random flip through my iPod that landed on the Tsar record…remember them?):

Name a band that you’ve worked that flopped commercially (in whatever relative definition you use where you work), but you think deserved to be a success. A band you’d wish had caught on but just didn’t stick. A record you still listen to and think “too bad we couldn’t break them”

I’ll start with two.

First from my TVT days, the band Wayne. Influences ranging from the power-pop of the Raspberries to the quiet singer/songwriter of Nick Drake, the album is sweet without being wimpy and tight without sounding forced. And yet if someone wants to be nice and check the soundscan, I’d bet it never broke 20K.

My overlooked Sony band is Ari Hest, which I spoke about in detail in my top 10 review. It looks, however, like Columbia is going to pick up and run with this project, and if anyone can break singer/songwriters with mainstream appeal, it’s them.

So, what bands do you look upon as a missed opportunity?

Woo. A whole bunch of randomness today.

First off, although I’m not in love with John Kerry, Duhbya has to be the worst public speaker in history. My grandma coulda done better, and she’s dead. Hey George, maybe you should look words like ‘sovereignty’ up before using them, in case some reporter catches you on it and you end up sounding like an idiot. Well, at least it wasn’t a series of SNAFUs caught on tape and posted on the internet to be mocked for all eternity. Aaaand that’s all for politics, folks.

As Britney descends into total swamp trashdom, it appears she’s decided to get rid of her place just down the block from my old employers. Here’s some pics of the fancy pad she’s giving up. [Via curbed.com]

From the NSFW-but-not-quite-gratuitous-porn department, we have what must surely be a photoshoot from an upcoming Apple ad campaign. Perhaps she could use some of these iEverything-inspired butt plugs in her next one, just to really drive the point home. Hi mom!

In new music news, I’d like to echo allmusic.com’s sentiment regarding the new Dana Owens a.k.a. Queen Latifah record, in that the worst thing about it is it makes you sad that this is her first record where she sings all the way through. A versatile talent, this woman is. Except for the abomination that Taxi looks like. What were you thinking, Jimmy..What were you thinking.

If you’re a music journalist enlisted to review the new Interpol (I’m not a huge fan but people seem to like them), there’s a helpful article of 101 things to compare them to other than Joy Division. Get it? Cause people said they sounded like Joy Division before. And even though they do, people are sick of hearing that comparison. So, funny. heh.

From the “It’s 1 in the morning and I dont want to think of any other clever From The Desk Of lines” department, three random bits of information before I go enjoy my new stereo. The should-be-up-in-the-porn-paragraph-but-really-not-porn service Rasterbator will take jpgs and … well .. rasterize ‘em so you can print ‘em out real big. But really I just liked the name.

Distributor of all that is cool in the electronica world K7 has decided to put “Not Copy Protected” labels on all of their CDs. Kinda speaks for itself that they have this.

and we have this:

Okay so maybe it was only two things.

G’nite gracie.
