Presenting “Conversations for Deeper Context”

So, as most of you probably know, one of the ways that I’ve been spending my time the last few years is through Deeper Context, a freelance thing I started back in 2011. The tagline for DC is “Let’s get together and talk about what drives you. For you, for the web and for your people.”, which I think describes what I’m trying to accomplish.

I’m very much avoiding as much of the Marketing and Social Media aspects of what is going on in culture today as possible.  I’ve written plenty about what I think of “content creation for marketing” elsewhere on this site, so I will not bore you with another rant.  Suffice it to say that this is not that.

I’ve been in a bit of a lull with DC as of late.  Other things have taken over my time (dealing with my father’s death, etc).  Recently, I had the opportunity to start some things back up, and get unstuck on some aspects of the organization that I wasn’t in love with. I feel comfortable moving forward in some small ways.

To that end, I’m happy to announce the debut of Conversations For Deeper Context, a semi-regular podcast interview series which serves two purposes:

  1. It allows me to have conversations with people that I find super interesting
  2. I get to demonstrate how a Deeper Context project might go, to people like you who might be interested in collaborating with me.

So, for the sake of avoiding paragraph-long descriptors…

Here’s what Conversations For Deeper Context is:

  • Conversations with people about their curiosity and how they’re applying it in their lives and their work (however that may manifest in their lives)
  • Personal, heart-prioritized conversations
  • About an hour per-episode
  • Irregularly updated
  • Hosted by me (Jeremy Meyers)

Here’s what Conversations For Deeper Context isn’t:

  • A place to hear about marketing, social media, sales or business. Seriously. That’s not what this is about, and if it comes up, it’s accidental.
  • A place for people to spend an hour plugging their latest projects
  • A place for self-help folks to hawk their books
  • A sales pitch for Deeper Context. These conversations are meant to stand on their own, and I hope they are valuable to you.

Few things give me more joy than sitting around and talking music with other knowledgeable nerds, so I’m always particularly appreciative when Chris Coleman of invites me on their film score podcast (The Soundcast).

This week, we all gave our thoughts on the Lucas/Disney news and who we thought would direct and score the new episodes, and it turned into a lively discussion with some pretty out there suggestions.

Music I’m Digging Friday: new Freelance Whales!

There’s something really important about having a balance of production and consumption in life.  Whenever I find myself too much on either side of that ratio, my life takes a stagnant turn.  Thusfar in 2012, between Deeper Context needing a bit of a revamp and our move to Atlanta taking up a lot of my mental energies, the balance has taken a turn for the worse.  I know I’m not the most prolific blogger, but I’d like to be sharing more with you.

I used to do a music podcast called Sounds From My Drawers, which some of y’all may have listened to.

As with many things, life started getting in the way of that production, and it turned out to not be as fun as I thought it would be.  I’m thinking about bringing it back with a partner, since the back-and-forth of music geeks is something that can make for compelling listening.

In the meantime, for the sake of people who sometimes ask me for new music recommendations, and in order to start putting more content out there into the world (which I’ve slacked on lately, and am really feeling the effects of), this is the first of what I’m committing to do as a weekly post.  Behold, “Music I’m Digging Friday!” (because Music Monday is too much alliteration for me).

This Week: Freelance Whales – “Spitting Image

I’m a big fan of a certain brand of indie pop, which is typically filed under ‘baroque pop’.  Music that fills the room, with delicate, unusual-for-pop-music instrument combinations (things like cello, violin, flute, etc) is a welcome respite from the slick robotic pop of the 2000s and 2010s (not that I’m not also a fan of robotic pop, of course).

Bands like Camera Obscura, The Helio Sequence, The Format (now better known as Fun.), and yes even Florence + The Machine (their first album, anyway) are never far from my iPod.

Freelance Whales is in a similar vein, featuring la-la-y overdubbed-to-sound-like-a-small-amateur-choir backing vocals and joyful melodies.

This song would be great for a giddy montage.  Their second album comes out in October.

Introducing Deeper Context

The Origin Story

As many of you know, I spent most of 2011 searching for work, after my time at Waggener Edstrom came to an end.  After a lot of soul-searching (and even more job board searching), I realized that the perfect job for me was not out there, so in September I decided to create the job I wanted.

Deeper Context LogoAs my professional passion has been feeding people’s curiosity through well-told and passionate anecdotes, I decided to make that the core focus.  It just so happened that I’d conceived of and registered the perfect name and url for the project several years ago:

The most challenging part of getting Deeper Context up and running since my decision to start has been clarifying my vision in terms that actually describe what I find so rewarding about talking to people about the things they love, and explaining why I think its so valuable for potential clients to embrace this kind of conversation in their marketing efforts. I realize that I’ve blogged a lot about these issues right here, so I wont rehash them (you can click on the sidebar to read any of the posts I’m talking about), and I’m working toward having Deeper Context embody as many of them as possible.

Defining Terms: What is Deeper Context

To quote myself:

We produce mini-documentaries that reveal and explore the human themes within your brand.  These stories excite existing fans — and attract new ones.

DEEPER CONTEXT develops and produces non-fiction audio and video series for the web and portable devices.  Our focus is on the personal experiences of carefully selected interview subjects who are passionate about the world your brand inhabits. They are delivered in a personal, intimate and conversational tone, that resonate emotionally with people in a way that a list of features and benefits cannot.

The website includes a mission statement, some conversation about the value of my work to potential clients, and a portfolio of some of the work I’ve done in this vein (mostly as an employee of Sony Music, though I hope to have that remedied as the weeks and months go by), which I do hope you check out. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, advice or suggestions you may have to offer me as I begin this journey.


My Hope For Your Involvement

I have two things to ask of you, dear reader, dear friend.

  1. If my undertaking seems like it might be of value to your or your organization, or if what I’m working on trip some synapses in your head that lead to you having suggestions or recommendations for me, please do let me know.  I’m looking for a few “seed” projects to build up the portfolio and get some good practice in interacting with clients who I consider friends.  I’m also looking for people to partner with, and am quite open to value exchanges.
  2. From time to time, I will be stuck lost and confused about what to do next (okay, let’s be honest, it’s going to be a regular occurrence).  Starting a business is a tough process for which there is no foolproof method, as I’ve learned already.  If you’re in a similar position, don’t keep it to yourself.  Talk to me, blog about it, Skype with a friend, SHARE what you’re learning.  I will do my best to do the same.

What’s Next For My Writing

For those of you who are RSS subscribers (and I know there are a few), you may be interested in the fact that I’ve launched a redesign of, putting more posts front-and-center in a magazine-style format.  This stems from the fact that I am not the worlds most prolific blogger (choosing to post only when I feel I have something worthwhile to say), and the reverse-chronological layout I had previously did not really provide access to all the useful posts from the archives.  I’ve re-categorized 10 years worth of posts to consolidate the main topics down from 23 to 7, and I hope that it proves useful.

I plan to continue blogging here at, and will also be posting more tactical stuff about digital storytelling dos and don’ts over at the Deeper Context blog (which is a little barren at the moment, but I have big plans for it!)

The road ahead is exciting and scary, but a few people have helped me along through this process that I would be remiss in not mentioning by name.

  • Amanda Lee Anderson, who designed the Deeper Context logo, and has been supportive of me and the new project throughout.
  • Megan Elizabeth Morris, whose boundless enthusiasm, infectious energy and pragmatic advice kept me pushing forward when I was ready to start looking for digital strategy jobs.
